The historical restoration of a windmill in Golden Gate Park

San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park will soon be home once again to the largest Dutch windmill in the world.
Known as the Murphy Windmill, the restoration of this San Francisco Landmark has been ongoing since 2008.
It was built in 1905 to augment the North Windmill built in 1902. In their heyday, these two “San Francisco Giants” as they’re known in the Netherlands, pumped 1.5 million gallons of water daily, transforming the western end of Golden Gate Park from sand dunes to a sylvan sanctuary.

Since 2008, but especially during the past several months, I have been photographing the restoration by Roebuck Construction of the Murphy Windmill in Golden Gate Park.

This week and the next are heady and exciting times for the historical restoration project.
This Friday, September 9th, the two ton rotating ring is to be hauled up and positioned on top of the windmill’s newly restored tower.
On Monday September 12th, a massive crane will again be brought to the site. The newly restored 64 ton copper-plated cap, will be lifted up in a single piece and placed atop the rotating ring. On the same day, the two massive 108 feet long sail spars will be fitted into the cap’s axle.
